BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- For Kiefer Sutherland, filming the TV movie 24: Redemption in South Africa carried with it its own special, personal reward.
In 2003, Sutherland narrated Crisis Zone, a 13-part documentary profile of 45 doctors and nurses who work for Medecins Sans Frontieres, Doctors Without Borders, in some of the most blighted, war-torn countries of the world, many of them in Africa.
24: Redemption afforded Sutherland an opportunity to see a part of the continent with his own eyes. There's a quality in the light and the air in southern Africa that can't be matched on a sound stage in Burbank, Sutherland said, where he, as counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer, has spent six seasons of 24 defeating international evil. Kiefer Sutherland says filming 24:Redemption on location in South Africa made it much easier for him to immerse himself in the role of Jack Bauer. More importantly, there's an authenticity to the people -- the laughing children, the unique African accent, which is so different from the accent of the U.S. inner city -- that gave him a sense of time and place.
Filming 24: Redemption on location made it that much easier to immerse himself in the role of someone who is trying to reclaim a part of his soul, Sutherland said.
"There were these incredible winds coming in off the Cape at that time of year," Sutherland said. "It would rain for four hours and then stop. There was always a weather issue of some kind.
"And yet, by the same token, it was one of those places where we found an incredibly dedicated crew, which you don't necessarily find anywhere in the world. And we had the best extras I've ever seen in my life. We had street scenes that you don't see in the trailers, where we had 500 people walking in a crowded street, and a gun battle breaks out. The predicament of these people -- they really took on their performances. They hit the ground, falling in the street, hard, clutching children. There was a kind of boldness in the actors, from the extras on up, that I hadn't seen in a long time."
24: Redemption premieres Sunday on Global and Fox at 8 ET/PT. Medecins Sans Frontiere's website is http://www.msf.org. Link back to site | |
