Actor Donald Sutherland received the 2,430th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, honoring a career that has included appearances in more than 130 films, including ``MASH' and ``Ordinary People.'

``From the very bottom of my heart, I thank the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for letting this happen,' Sutherland told the crowd gathered for the ceremony.

Sutherland, 75, joked that a star on the Walk of Fame was better than a headstone at a cemetery.

``This marker I can actually come and visit,' he said. ``No, I could get a chair and sit here, or a bucket and a mop and clean it, and make sure that people don't step on it.'

Sutherland's star is next to that of his son, Kiefer, who was unable to attend the ceremony because he is working in New York, but sent a letter that was read by actor Colin Farrell.

``I selfishly wanted to be there to simply tell you how proud I am to have you as my father and how even more proud I am to be your son,' Kiefer Sutherland wrote. ``I miss you very much.'

Farrell will appear with Sutherland in the comedy ``Horrible Bosses' due out later this year.

The ceremony comes two days before the release of the Sutherland's latest film, ``The Mechanic,' where he portrays the mentor of an elite assassin (Jason Statham).

Another film starring Sutherland is due out Feb. 11 -- the Roman epic adventure ``The Eagle,' where he portrays the uncle of a young centurion (Channing Tatum) who seeks to uncover the truth about the disappearance of his father's legion in the north of Britain 20 years earlier.

Born July 17, 1935 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Sutherland's film credits include ``The Dirty Dozen,' ``The Day of the Locust,' ``1900,' ``Invasion of the Body Snatchers,' ``Klute,' ``JFK,' ``Backdraft,' and ``Animal House.'

Sutherland won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his portrayal of the commanding officer of a forensic specialist (Stephen Rea) hunting for a Soviet serial killer (Jeffrey DeMunn) in the 1995 HBO made-for-television movie, ``Citizen X.'

Sutherland also won a Golden Globe award for his portrayal of presidential adviser Clark Clifford in the 2002 HBO made-for-television movie ``Path to War.'

Kiefer's star is the 2,377th star on the Walk of Fame, Donald's is star is the 2,430th and both are located at 7024 Hollywood Blvd.
