Before Kiefer Sutherland makes his way back to the small screen, the 24 alum will be seen in a new web series, The Confession — a project that very well may end up as one of his career favorites.

Check out photos of Kiefer Sutherland

"This is the first thing in my entire career that I've been involved in from the inception of the idea to the delivery of the product," Sutherland says in a behind-the-scenes look at the series. "My interest stemmed from the challenge of trying to tell a five-minute story over a long period of time, and clearly the Internet is the largest network on the planet. ... The potential for this landscape is massive."

Kiefer Sutherland returns to TV

The Confession, composed of 10 five-to-seven-minute webisodes, follows a hit man (Sutherland) who discusses why his victims deserved to die with a priest (John Hurt). "[Each episode] will deal with kind of a more of an intellectual, theological discussion about God and then cut back to a murder or a crime he had committed," Sutherland explains.

The series was shot over nine days in New York in January and also stars Michael Badalucco and Max Casella. It will premiere on Hulu this month.

See what else Sutherland, the cast and crew have to say about The Confession:

EXCLUSIVE: Behind the Scenes of Kiefer Sutherland's 'The Confession' (VIDEO)
by Chris Harnick, posted Mar 11th 2011 3:15PM

Kiefer Sutherland and John Hurt are teaming up for what's sure to be an epic action thriller, 'The Confession.' Here's the catch -- it's a Web series!

"This experience that is 'The Confession' has taken everything I have learned over the last 25 years from storytelling to acting and challenged it in a way like no other experience that I've had," Sutherland said in a statement. "From five- to seven-minute episodes, to creating a character that I believe is edgy enough to stand out and make an impression in the vast Internet. In short, I'm having a blast."

The project is written and directed by Brad Mirman; Sutherland serves as an executive producer. Look for episodes to start on Hulu on March 28.

Check out an exclusive behind the scenes preview of Sutherland at work below.

'The Confession': Behind the scenes of Kiefer Sutherland's online series
By Rick Porter March 22, 2011 8:29 PM ET Follow @Zap2itRick on TwitterTwitter

Kiefer Sutherland's next series debuts in just a few days -- just not on traditional television.

Sutherland is the star and an executive producer of "The Confession," a web series that debuts Monday, March 28 on Hulu. He plays a hitman who's making a confession to a priest (John Hurt), which is interspersed with flashbacks to some of the bad deeds his character has done.

In the latest behind-the-scenes featurette from the show (which you can see only on Zap2it), Sutherland talks about the freedom and the challenges of trying to tell stories in five- to seven-minute episodes. ("The Confession" will run for 10 episodes.)

"What's exciting to me, and also frustrating, about doing something on the Internet, is you're truly limited [only] by your own imagination," he says. "And you don't have to pay for a thing. You just log on and watch it."

Sutherland and writer-director Brad Mirman ("Truth or Consequences, N.M.") also talk about the fact that improvements in technology mean that someone watching on a laptop, tablet or phone will see the series with the same clarity as on a TV set, just a little smaller. "It's not like watching four years ago, these cheesy little videos," Mirman says. "You can do full HD projects."

You can see previous behind-the-scenes clips and a trailer for "The Confession" on Hulu.

Sutherland, currently starring in "That Championship Season" on Broadway, may return to more conventional TV next season. He's set to star in a FOX pilot called "Touch" that will film in the summer, after his run in the play ends. He's also said in interviews this week that a "24" movie is on track to begin shooting early next year.

THE CONFESSION ON HULU MARCH 28th at 5am EST

From Brad Mirman's blog, writer and director of "The Confession":

Oh yeah! Can you feel it? Only three more days until the release of THE CONFESSION on Hulu. It's been a long wait, Well, not really. Not when most films take over a year to come out - but never the less, the day is almost here. So click it. Watch it, then watch it again and tell all your friends to do the same.

VIDEO: Kiefer Sutherland Compares Killer Role in The Confession to Jack Bauer
Mar 27, 2011 10:21 PM ET by Robyn Ross

Throughout the 10-part web series The Confession, Kiefer Sutherland stars as a professional killer in an exploration of good vs. evil.

In each of the 5-minute-to-9-minute episodes, only the wall of a confessional separates Sutherland's character from a priest as he confesses his crimes and flashbacks reveal his journey to becoming a cold-blooded killer seeking redemption.

"[The character] strongly believes the people he's killed deserve it and right there is one of the greatest moral discussions of all time," the former 24 star tells TVGuide.com. "He wants to believe there's good out there and people can change because I think he wants to change."

Check out photos of Kiefer Sutherland

After playing Jack Bauer for 8 seasons on 24, Sutherland knows a thing or two about morally complicated characters. But does the actor see any similarities between the characters? "They possess a lot of the similar skills," Sutherland says. "[But] this is a bad guy."

Sutherland and executive producer Chris Young of Digital Broadcasting Group say The Confession rates with anything you'd see on another medium.

"We really tried to make the highest-quality product we could so I would be proud to show this in a theater or on network TV. It's as good as any film I've ever done," Sutherland says. Mundy adds: "It was all about proving that A-list talent, A-list production quality and a script can originate online."

Even John Hurt, who plays the priest, hopped on board despite not having a clue about web series. "I thought, I don't know what you're talking about, [but] we all know that the world of entertainment is constantly changing and so therefore it seemed to make sense," he says.

The Confession debuts Monday on Hulu.com.

Kiefer Sutherland makes online 'Confession'
By: Andrew Wallenstein

Kiefer Sutherland refuses to let you miss him.

Though the memory of his run on “24” has barely faded, and the prospect of his return to Fox via drama pilot “Touch” is highly likely, the actor just isn't going to run the risk that his mug might slip your mind.

What other explanation could there for an actor of his stature starring in a mere Web series, right? Beginning Monday on Hulu and elsewhere on the Internet, "The Confession" is a short-form 10-episode series with the kind of star power rarely seen online.

Sutherland plays a merciless hit man whose amoral ways are confronted by a priest (John Hurt) in a conversation inside his confessional. Think "The Phone Booth" crossed with "Collateral."

True, it's not the first time a former primetime fixture has deigned to perform in a webisode. Recall "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow taking a lead role in "Web Therapy," which will be replayed on Showtime later this year.

But as with Kudrow and "Therapy," "Confession" delivers a bigger surprise than just who its star is; the real shock is that the series is actually quite good judging from the three episodes I got to see ahead of their release.

A nicely produced and scripted webisode is a real rarity, as anyone who follows this woeful genre can tell you. It will be interesting to see whether the online video marketplace has evolved enough to make this a viable enterprise after too many false starts.

"Confession" is produced by Digital Broadcasting Group.

Hulu debuts Kiefer Sutherland drama -- VIDEO
by Lynette Rice

If you’re missing the sight of 24′s Kiefer Sutherland brandishing a weapon, then you’re in luck: Hulu today debuted the first installment of The Confession, 10 five-to-seven-minute webisodes that feature the actor as a hitman who has a theological discussion with a priest (John Hurt of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) about why his victims deserved to die.

Production values are top notch in the first webisode, in which Sutherland’s character — no less intense than Jack Bauer – enters a Catholic church confessional and begins, “bless me father for I have sinned exceedingly….” Oof. Apparently, it’s been 35 years since his last confession.

The Confession was shot over nine days in New York in December, right before Sutherland began rehearsals for Broadway’s That Championship Season, which also stars Jason Patric and Chris Noth. Much of the story plays out in action-packed flashbacks.

Hulu Web Series The Confession To Go International With Sony

Back in May the popular Hulu web series The Confession, starring Kiefer Sutherland and John Hurt, got picked up for a movie deal from Image Entertainment. Now comes the announcement that the series is getting international distribution courtesy of Sony Pictures Television. The Confession will now play on several platforms in 125 countries, and Sony will handle the DVD and digital distribution everywhere outside of North America. The 10-episode series has been quite the success for Digital Broadcasting Group and one of the top examples of the medium becoming increasingly more legitimate in the eyes of advertisers.

This means a tremendous amount of people will be exposed to short-form series. Starting Monday, The Confession will be seen in Korea, and by next week several countries in Europe will get to see it. Eventually, a large portion of Asia and Europe will have a chance to see this show. The quality of the series certainly helped sell it internationally, but the presence of name actors is always a big draw overseas. This is what the medium needs more than anything to sell. Trusted names add luster to a product.

And just think…it’s a drama. Most web success stories almost always revolve around comedy, so this news bodes well for different genres becoming more commercially viable. Drama has been a tough sell on the web because it’s difficult to tell a story in small snippets. This is why you see some of them get constructed into movies, and the announcement of The Confession‘s international sale seems to point to that being a possibility overseas as well, although I don’t know what that does to the planned movie we heard about a few months ago.

What likely happens is the series gets a DVD release as a feature-length movie, and not a TV show, and probably not released in movie theaters. Image Entertainment will have North America, and Sony will have everywhere else.

This is tremendous for web series. The market no longer sees North America as the end-all to overall success, as we’ve seen with theatrical releases over the past few years. The more eyes and ears a web series can gather, the closer they get to becoming a no-brainer attraction for advertisers and distributors.
