Andrelton Simmons wins 2019 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award
Today, Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons was named as the winner of a Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award. Since the award was established in 2012, Simmons has now received the honors six times, which is the most for any player at any position. Milwaukee's Lorenzo Cain is the only other player to have won at least four times. In addition to being honored six times at shortstop, Simmons was also named as the Overall Defensive Player of the Year in 2015.
Winners of the award are determined using a formula that combines traditional defensive stats with advanced metrics, as well as the data logged by the baseball experts working for the scouting service Inside Edge.
Each winning recipient receives a unique trophy, engraved with their name and team logo. Simmons will receive his award during a pregame ceremony early in the 2020 season.
