Sutherland show has magic Touch Slow-burning supernatural thriller offers new episode BY ALEX STRACHAN, POSTMEDIA NEWS SEPTEMBER 12, 2012
And now for something completely different: a previously unaired episode of a returning drama that won’t be back with its new season until the end of next month.
Touch, a supernatural thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland as a widower and former reporter navigating life with his mute, emotionally challenged 11-year-old son, was always going to be a tough sell with a mainstream audience because of its uneven mix of spirituality and science, and its quiet, introspective scenes between father and son. Conventional, mainstream TV tends to be noisy and frenetic, not reflective.
And while Touch touched enough viewers to warrant a second season — it returns officially on Oct. 26 — it was by no means a hit, finishing its abbreviated freshman year with a cumulative U.S. and Canadian audience of nine million viewers, good enough to rank 45th out of roughly 115 prime-time shows.

Friday ratings: 'Shark Tank' returns strong, 'Touch' soft by James Hibberd Tags: TV Ratings, News
ABC’s Shark Tank returned Friday night with a strong performance, while Fox’s Touch delivered a soft number in a new time slot.
Shark Tank launched its fourth season to 6.3 million viewers and a 1.7 rating among adults 18-49. That’s actually a series high for the business pitch show in terms of total audience, though in the key adult demo the hour matched January’s third season debut. ABC followed up with similarly solid premieres for Primetime: What Would You Do (5.3 million, 1.7) and 20/20 (6.1 million, 1.
Over on Fox, a special airing of Kiefer Sutherland’s mystical drama Touch (2.9 million, 0.7) performed weakly, which doesn’t bode well for the show’s official return Oct. 26. On The CW, the latest episode of the college edition of America’s Next Top Model (1.5 million, 0.7) climbed a tad.

Touch set for new time slot Reuters October 7, 2012
Fans of the Kiefer Sutherland drama Touch will have to wait a little longer for the series to kick off its second season.
Fox has moved the series' season première to a to-be-determined date and time in January. New episodes of the Gordon Ramsay reality hit Kitchen Nightmares will now kick off on Oct. 26 at 8 p.m., when Touch was originally scheduled to resume.
The shift allows Touch to have an uninterrupted run and means that the series will benefit from strong promotional platforms.
The series, which stars Sutherland as Martin Bohm, a reporter and single father with an emotionally disturbed but extraordinarily gifted son Jake (David Mazouz), premiered in March to a strong 3.3 rating/9 share in the advertiser-cherished 18-49 demographic, although it dropped to a low of 1.3 in the demo with its June finale.

Keith David joins season two of Kiefer Sutherland's 'Touch' Published Monday, Oct 15 2012, 11:13am EDT | By Morgan Jeffery
Keith David has won a guest role on season two of Touch.
The Platoon actor will play an old friend of Martin Bohm (Kiefer Sutherland) on the Fox drama's sophomore run.
His character Dutch is a "grizzled" former Navy Seal, according to TVLine.
56-year-old David is best known for his film credits, including roles in 1982's The Thing, 1988's They Live, 1998's Armageddon and 2000's Pitch Black. He will also appear in forthcoming blockbuster Cloud Atlas.
His television appearances include a role on short-lived NBC drama The Cape and guest stints on Numb3rs and ER.
The second season of Touch was originally scheduled to premiere in the US on October 26 but was later pushed back to January 2013. The three-month delay is reportedly designed to give the returning show an uninterrupted run and a bigger promotional lift.
Maria Bello (ER), Lukas Haas (24), Said Taghmaoui (Lost) and Saxon Sharbino (I Spit on Your Grave) will all join Touch next season as series regulars.

read about Touch getting pulled. Is it getting canceled and does this mean we will finally get to see a 24 movie? Kiefer Sutherland in the Pilot episode of 'Touch'
Yes, in case you missed it, season two of Kiefer Sutherland's touchy-feely (no pun intended) collaboration with Heroes creator Tim Kring has been pushed back by Fox in the US - originally slated for October, new episodes will now air from January 2013.
But while no show's future is ever 100% secure, this postponement probably doesn't spell the end for Touch - in fact, reports suggest that the delay is actually to allow for an unbroken run of episodes and a bigger promotional push.
As for the long-awaited 24 movie, Touch has only been put back by three months - certainly not enough time to shoot a big-budget action movie. All you Jack Bauer fans will just have to remain patient a little while longer.

2013 Winter Premieres By Rachel Thomas, About.com GuideOctober 27, 2012
With only two months left of 2012, the networks are starting to make plans for next year.
ABC Family and Fox are the first to announce their winter premiere dates. Switched at Birth (which just aired their season one finale last week) and Bunheads kick things off on Monday, January 7, followed by Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game on January 8.
With only two midseason dramas entering the mix this winter, Fox debuts their high octane Kevin Bacon-led crime drama The Following on January 21. Will the series live up to all the hype? Last season's hit series Touch, which was supposed to premiere this fall, is set to finally premiere on Friday, February 1. Can the Kiefer Sutherland series stand up to the stiff Friday night competition?

DVD Review: Touch - The Complete First Season Author: Sherry Lipp — Published: Nov 17, 2012 at 6:57 am
Is it possible that everything in the universe is connected by some kind of cosmic string that can only be seen by putting the right sequences of numbers together? That’s the concept the FOX show Touch attempts to explore.
The show stars Kiefer Sutherland as single father Martin Bohm struggling to raise his emotionally-challenged son, Jake (David Mazouz). Jake does not speak or appear to communicate physically and he hates to be physically touched. At its core, Touch is about the relationship between father and son, but the story that pushes the show along from week to week is about Jake’s connection with the rest of the world. The show is a drama and a supernatural thriller rolled into one. At times it could seem disjointed, but in the end the father-son relationship and the allure of seeing how everything is going to connect draws the viewer in.
At first glance, the idea that Jake has some kind of “magical power” allowing him to see connections no one else can is far-fetched. It also might seem offensive. The suggestion that autism (or some part of the autism spectrum) gives a child some kind of supernatural ability is exploitative. However, Touch shies away from saying that Jake is autistic. In the pilot episode Martin tells Jake’s social worker Clea (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) that the diagnosis never seemed to fit. We have to take explanation at face value. The show does not spend a lot of time talking about the specifics of autism, so we don’t know why Martin feels that way. What we do know is that Jake appears detached, doesn’t speak, hates physical contact, and is obsessed with numbers and cell phones. We also know that he is trying to find something, or tell someone something, but he doesn’t know how. He repeatedly runs away, which results in his father losing full custody of him.
After Jake is placed in a care facility Martin is desperate to get him back. Martin is a widower whose wife died in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Before his wife died he had been a prominent reporter and his work often took him away from home for long periods of time. He feels he owes it to his son and his wife’s memory to be a good father. Martin does a quick internet search for “Mutism + Cell” and finds Dr. Arthur Teller (Danny Glover). The man tells him that Jake is trying to communicate with him through the numbers. Martin starts to piece the patterns together and finds himself helping people who have some kind of problem too big for them to solve on their own.
Touch is a very episodic show. Each week Jake is focused on a new set of numbers, the meaning of which Martin must decipher. An overriding story arc forms slowly throughout the series, solidifying in the last half of the season. It would involve too many spoilers to give away more of the show’s secrets, but the bigger picture has to do with Jake’s cosmic place in the universe. I liked how the mystery of it all slowly unfolded, becoming more mysterious with each episode while at the same revealing more and more about Jake.
Each passing episode revealed more about Martin as well. As he followed the path Jake’s numbers led him on, it would usually be discovered they were connected to his life as much as the people he was trying to help. Throughout the course of the season we learned more about his late wife, his marriage, and what his life has been like since his wife’s death. We don’t learn much about what Martin’s life was like before Jake was born, or what kind of person he was. It would be nice to get an even bigger picture, but what was revealed gave the show greater emotional weight.
Most of Martin’s quests were pretty interesting. The numbers are connected to different people throughout the world and it was interesting to see how it all tied together, relating back to Martin and Jake. One of my favorite episodes revolved around a plane crash survivor (David Julian Hirsh) who ends up connected to the social worker Clea’s mother (Carlease Burke). Everything cleverly tied together in such unexpected ways, and the episode packed an emotional punch. The two-part finale, “Gyre,” culminated in a more action-oriented episode than usual as Martin starts to put more of the pieces together and must decide how he can best help Jake. This episode deepened the mystery, making the show even more interesting. The episode was also emotionally touching. In addition to Martin trying to keep his bond with Jake, it dealt with survivors of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, as well as a woman (Maria Bello) searching for her missing daughter. These episodes made me anticipate what is to come next season.
The DVD release of Touch includes only a few special features, including the extended pilot episode, deleted scenes and two featurettes, “Fate’s Equations” and “Touch the World.” The featurettes have interviews with Sutherland and show’s creator, Tim Kring. They offered some cool insights into the show and it was nice to see how dedicated to it they are. The DVD set unfortunately does not contain the bonus episode “The Road Not Taken,” which aired in September 2012. It was disappointing this episode was not included on this set as it is considered to be episode 13 of the first season. Hopefully it will be included with the eventual season two DVD release.
Season two of Touch is scheduled to air February 1, 2013. You can learn more about Touch at the show’s official website.

'Mob Doctor' Canceled? Things Don't Look Good For Fox Series; 'Touch' Gets ... Huffington Post Posted: 11/28/2012 3:03 pm EST
Out with "The Mob Doctor," in with "Touch."
Fox's "Touch" has a new season premiere date, with the show's sophomore season beginning with a two-hour special on Fri., Feb. 8 from 8 to 10 p.m. EST.
While Fox is treating the Kiefer Sutherland drama better these days, the same can't be said for "The Mob Doctor," according to THR. The final four episodes of "The Mob Doctor" will air on Sat., Dec. 29, Mon., Dec. 31, Sat., Jan. 5 and Mon., Jan. 7.
The series, which stars Jordana Spiro as a young doctor working to pay off her brother's debt to the mob, has consistently struggled in the ratings, dropping as low as a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic. It looks like cancellation is near.
It's been a rough ride for "Touch" in this 2012-2013 TV season as well. The show's second season was originally scheduled to premiere on Friday, October 26, but "Kitchen Nightmares" took its place. Then, the Season 2 premiere of "Touch" was given a February 1 premiere date, before today's news, pushing it to February 8. "Touch's" second season will shift its setting from New York to L.A. when Martin (Sutherland) and his son Jake (David Mazouz) find themselves in the middle of a "global conspiracy."

Touch, the critically acclaimed adventure drama series starring Emmy Award winner Kiefer Sutherland (“24”), will launch its anticipated second season with a special action-packed two-hour premiere on Friday, Feb. 8 (8/7c) on FOX.
In Season Two of Touch, the dramatic action shifts from New York to Los Angeles, where single father Martin Bohm (Sutherland) and his gifted son, Jake (David Mazouz), are on the run. When it’s discovered that they are all targets of the mysterious and possibly sinister corporation, Aster Corps., the desperate search for Amelia intensifies. Factoring into the unfolding equation is the genius of Aster Corps., Calvin Norburg (Lukas Haas, “24”), who’s on the verge of making a career-defining discovery, as well as the extreme religious zealot Guillermo Ortiz (Said Taghmaoui, “G.I. Joe: The Rise of The Cobra”), who stops at nothing to attain his vision. As ominous connections appear, Martin remains determined to uncover a global conspiracy in order to protect his family and save the lives of the innocent.

Fox Didn't Steal Plot For Kiefer Sutherland Show, Judge Says By Helen Christophi
Law360, Los Angeles (February 13, 2013, 10:11 PM ET) -- A New York federal judge on Wednesday let Fox Entertainment Group Inc. escape a suit alleging it stole an author's screenplay and turned it into actor Kiefer Sutherland's TV show "Touch," ruling the two works were dissimilar.
U.S. District Judge William H. Pauley III granted Fox’s motion to dismiss Everette Hallford’s amended complaint claiming “Touch” had violated the copyright of his screenplay “Prodigy,” finding the plot, characters and sequence of the two works were substantially different.

Fox Wins Lawsuit Claiming 'Touch' Was Stolen 9:09 AM PST 2/14/2013 by Eriq Gardner
Kiefer Sutherland, Peter Chernin and Tim Kring are off the hook after a judge finds there's no substantial similarities in the works of a mystical book writer.
A lawsuit that began with a touch of mysticism has concluded with a dose of inevitability.
Last March, just days before the Fox TV series Touch premiered, writer Everette Hallford sued the network, former president Peter Chernin, executive producers Kiefer Sutherland and Tim Kring for copyright infringement.
Hallford alleged that the series stole his screenplay, Prodigy, and his novel Visionary, but the claims haven't withstood the scrutiny of a New York federal judge, who tossed the lawsuit on Wednesday.
Hallford's book (Visionary) has been described as a story about a reporter sent to cover the visit of the mystic-prophet figure, hurled into an adventure that spans 60 years of history. His screenplay (Prodigy) dealt with a journalist, who with the help of an autistic boy, solves a mystery about a man who prevented a train accident. The story explores the man's grief for his lost wife, recurring nightmares and the struggles of the boy to communicate with the outside world.
PHOTOS: Midseason 2013: TV's Newest Series
According to the original complaint, Hallford says that in 2009, while caring for his newborn granddaughter at a New York children's hospital, he became friendly with a bioethics specialist who knew Kring, the creator of NBC's Heroes. Hallford says he passed along Prodigy, and that there was a "reasonable possibility" that it landed in Kring's hands.
But that really isn't particularly significant as U.S. District Judge William Pauley's chief job at the early stage of the lawsuit is to determine whether the works share "substantial similarity" in expression. If not, the case doesn't make it to a jury.
As a starting point, the judge notes that despite Hallford's claim that Touch is a "remolecularized version of Prodigy and Visionary," that the plaintiff "cannot mix and match alleged similarities between Touch and other works that are not related to one another."
The judge then says that Touch and Visionary "bear no similarities."
And as for the alleged similarity between Touch and Prodigy, the judge says that it is "legion," noting that both works are set in New York and the names of both of the main characters start with the letter "J."
There might be other surface similarities for those who squint hard enough, but the judge's description of the "fundamentally different" boy-characters in each work are a good illustration of why plaintiffs suing Hollywood studios for stealing their works almost always lose:
"Jonathan is autistic but is later cured of his symptoms. He speaks to characters by playing back a tape recording. Jonathan is 'practical[ly] an orphan' and longs for someone to talk to him. He enjoys being touched. Jake, by contrast, is never diagnosed with autism, even though he exhibits similar symptoms. He refuses to speak to anyone, even his father, and prefers to communicate by means of symbols and coded messages that lead his father to make connections with other people. Unlike Jonathan, whose father abandoned him, Jake has a loving father who will go to any length to keep him from being taken away. But despite this, Jake cannot bear to be touched by his father or anyone else."

02/28 2013 Fox’s ‘Touch’ future grim as Kiefer Sutherland offered new pilot
As if it was not obvious enough after looking at the ratings for “Touch,” Kiefer Sutherland may be looking to move on to other things after two seasons on the Fox drama. After all, another network has already expressed interest in casting the actor for a pilot; and more often than not, shows do not take this initiative unless they are pretty confident that the current series will not continue on for another year.
The pilot being offered to Sutherland now is an NBC drama entitled “The Black List,” which is about a nefarious criminal (set to be played by the actor) offering to sing like a canary on every single terrible person that he ever worked with. However, the catch here is that he only wants to work with a young FBI agent, and on the surface there appears to be no connection at all between the two.
This pilot would be in second position for Sutherland, meaning that if for some crazy reason Fox picks up “Touch” despite its awful ratings, he would remain with that show. However, it was almost a foregone conclusion what was going to happen here before the show even premiered. Fox for whatever reason shifted the show back after originally going to premiere it in the fall, and then Maria Bello made the decision to walk away from the series before season 2 even premiered. This had the feeling of something the network had very little confidence in, and we’re starting to see why based on the figures coming in.
Do you want to see Sutherland jump over to another show quickly, or do you think he should stop for a bit after this “Touch” debacle? Be sure to share what you think below, and you can read more on Bello’s exit over at the link here.

Is Kiefer Sutherland losing ‘Touch?’
It seems that the fates are not currently in favor of Kiefer Sutherland’s series ‘Touch’ because according to EW the actor has apparently been offered a new pilot by NBC, which is titled ‘The Black List’.
From Jon Bokenkamp, The Black List is about how the world’s most wanted criminal mysteriously turns himself in and offers to give up everyone he has ever worked with. His only condition is he will only work with a newly minted FBI agent with whom he seemingly has no connection.
It would seem that Sutherland has been offered the role of the criminal. Fox who produce ‘Touch’ probably will not be too happy with how it has been performing in its Friday night slot, but as yet they haven’t made any solid decisions about the shows future and are not likely to announce one until the New York Upfronts in May.
But the question most of Sutherland’s fan will want answered is just how will all this affect the ’24′ movie, which has to date had quite a few false starts and was actually supposed to begin filming.
