Kiefer Sutherland Is Returning to His Old TV Stomping Grounds

Ray Gustini Sep 23, 2011

Today in film and television: All My Children signs off, George Lucas cleans up, and Kiefer Sutherland returns to Fox as a dad on the edge.

Star Wars fanboys were outraged--outraged!--to learn that the Blu Ray edition of Return of the Jedi inserted audio of Darth Vader screaming "NOOO!" after Emperor Palpatine gets tossed off the Death Star, which didn't stop the franchise'a complete nine-disc Blu Ray set from registering $84 million in worldwide sales in its first week of release. That number doesn't include figures from the separate trilogy collections for Episodes IV-VI (the good ones) and Episodes I-III (the Hayden Christensen ones). [Variety]

24 star Kiefer Sutherland is returning to Fox this spring in Touch, another series about a man forced to make sense of things that are Not As They Seem. According to the Los Angeles Times, he'll play Martin Bohm "a widower who discovers that his mute 11-year-old son Jake has a special ability to see things and patterns that connect seemingly unrelated events—and it’s up to Martin to find the meaning in all of it." Which was basically the premise of 24's second season, except instead of a mute 11 year-old, he had a teenage daughter stuck in a cougar trap. The series was given a 13-episode commitment and will debut in the spring. [Show Tracker]

Richard Jenkins earned a Best Actor nomination in 2009 for The Visitor and has hit his prime as a lead at 60, but he's still game to play the occasional civil servant, which explains why he's signed on to play--wait for it--the Indianapolis district attorney prosecuting Tom Cruise's rough-and-tumble former Army sniper character Jack Reacher in One Shot, the first in a series of novels featuring Reacher by author Lee Child. Another possible factor: being an Oscar nominee in a stock role in a silly thriller has financial benefits. [The Hollywood Reporter]

All My Children ends its 41 year run on ABC today and while there's been discussion of the show continuing online, star Susan Lucci has already said she wouldn't consider it. It will be replaced starting Monday with a food talk show called The Chew. Even non-viewers can agree it's the end of some kind of era. In a Los Angeles Times editorial, novelist Alice Hoffman delivers a touching and thoughtful tribute to the show's four decades of just being there. [The Los Angeles Times]

KIEFER SUTHERLAND GETS IN “TOUCH” WITH HIS ACTING JOURNEY
16Jan2012 Filed under: AUDIO FILES/CONTENT, GENERAL, TELEVISION NEWS

fter the success of 24, Kiefer Sutherland is trying his hand at television once again with the drama Touch, playing a widower whose autistic son (David Mazouz) has the ability to connect random events with the use of numbers. Created by Tim Kring (Heroes, Crossing Jordan), the Fox show will air as a special preview January 25th (9 pm et/pt) before its regular season premiere on March 19th.

Although he’s been working as an actor since the 1980s, Sutherland admits that his craft is still a “work in progress.” Citing his father (Donald Sutherland) and fellow thespians he admires (Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman), the actor explains why there is more room for creative growth.

Kiefer Sutherland Happy With Family Bond

Kiefer Sutherland feels ''very fortunate'' to have such a good relationship with both his parents, who split up when he was three years old.

Kiefer Sutherland feels ''very fortunate'' to have such a good relationship with his parents.

The 'Touch' star's mother and father split up when he and twin sister Rachel were just three years old, and though he spent his childhood living with his mum, actress Shirley Douglas, Kiefer now has a very strong bond with his actor dad Donald Sutherland.

He said: ''I feel that I've been really fortunate where my family is concerned.

''I grew up with my mother and I have a very, very close relationship with my father now.''

Kiefer - who has daughter Sarah to his marriage to Camelia Kath, and is also stepfather to her daughter Michelle, as well as to second wife Kelly Winn's sons Julian and Timothy - relates to the character he plays in 'Touch', a widower struggling to raise his son, who has apparent psychic powers, because of the ''great pain and frustration'' of parenthood.

He added: ''My character's fight really is with child services, who are trying to take his son from him. He wants to have as normal a relationship as possible with him, which I think every parent can relate to.

''My youngest daughter is 24 and my oldest daughter is in her 30s, so the've come round the other side.

''I have two grandsons. I don't think anybody who has a child doesn't want the best they can possibly get for that child.

''The great pain and frustration of parenthood comes when we feel we aren't doing that.''

Kiefer's schedule delays '24' film
By WENN.COM Last Updated: March 23, 2012 12:41pm

Actor Kiefer Sutherland's commitment to the new TV series Touch has forced movies bosses to push back the film adaptation of 24.

The hit action drama came to an end in 2010 after eight seasons on air, but producers subsequently confirmed plans to turn it into a film.

The project has been plagued by scripting issues, and now the executive producer behind the TV show, Howard Gordon, reveals Sutherland's latest project has caused another delay for the Jack Bauer movie.

He tells Access Hollywood, “We were racing to get this thing done, and Kiefer was out promoting Touch and we got a script that we finally all really liked and we're talking to directors and it was all coming together, but it was kind of a run-n-gun...

“With Touch – I mean to just sort of jam it in, we all felt – at the last minute... it just didn't feel right to rush. We all feel so, so, strong about this – about this project - that we wanted to do it right.

"I think we are very committed to keeping it alive and to doing it, hopefully next cycle, when Kiefer next gets a break. Next year, yeah. Nobody wants it more than me – except maybe Kiefer."

The new campaign features Sutherland using the Acer laptop in his quest to create his own brand of cupcakes.

Sutherland takes on the tough attributes of his Jack Bauer character from TV series "24" as he bakes and makes a website for his "Dynamite Cupcakes".

The ad breaks today in the UK, Germany, France and Russia supported by a cinema execution, digital work and a series of print ads.

Mother won the business in February this year, when Acer announced it would be doubling its marketing spend as it looked to revitalise its image.

Martin Schellekens, global marketing director at Acer, said: "At Acer we’re interested in what people do with the technology we develop.

"The S5 Ultrabook is the first of many products that will help our users explore a different side of themselves, for Kiefer that was cupcake baking but over the coming year we’ll create more stories of characters exploring beyond their limits."

The ad campaign was created by Mother and directed by Ivan Zacharias, with producer Nick Landon and production company Stink.

Editor Richard Orrick worked on the TV spot with post production company The Mill while audio post production and sound design was handled by Jungle.

The photographer for the press ads was Brian Bowen Smith.

Kiefer tackles cupcake mission
Tuesday Oct 30 2012

Kiefer Sutherland has sent up his role as hardman Jack Bauer in a mission to make the ultimate cupcake, in a new advert.

The 24 star - who played special agent Jack Bauer in the long running and hugely popular TV series - stars in the new commercial for Acer computers, which shows him using his action skills to make tasty treats.

The voice over, in the style of an action film commercial, says the latest ultrabook was designed, "so we can all explore our hidden passions. For Mr Kiefer Sutherland, that passion is a moist fluffy cupcake."

The 45-year-old Canadian actor is shown in a car chase with a cupcake delivery van, before he interrogates the driver, asking "Who is your supplier?"

He then approaches a woman in the supermarket and asks threateningly, "Where's the icing?!" before raiding the baking aisle.

Kiefer then dismisses a picture of a pink, delicate cupcake on the internet, and blows up a car as inspiration to make his cakes in the shape of a mushroom cloud explosion.

In the spoof the action star mixes his cakes with drills and finished them off with a blow torch before finally unveiling his 'Dynamite Cupcakes'.

Kiefer Sutherland returns for another season of Touch

The Canadian Press
Published: February 7, 2013, 7:53 am
Updated: 1 day ago

Can Kiefer Sutherland regain his Touch?

The man who saved the world as Jack Bauer returns in a reboot of his latest Fox drama, Touch. A two-hour debut airs Friday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox and Global.

Touch stars Sutherland as Martin Bohm, a former reporter whose wife was killed in the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center. He’s struggling to raise their special needs son Jake (David Mazouz), who never speaks and won’t be touched.

Throughout the first season, Bohm comes to realize that Jake is communicating through a complicated series of numbers and patterns. What’s more, this language seems to be plugged into a larger, world-wide system. A professor who is later killed (played by Danny Glover), tells Bohm that his son is one of the few who can see “the pain of the universe” through the numbers.

Math not being every viewer’s strong suit, the numbers for Touch didn’t quite add up in its first season. Sutherland, interviewed last summer in Los Angeles, says Season Two is a whole new equation.

“It went from a story of a father and a son desperately trying to figure out a way to communicate with each other to a father who has almost been killed and has to protect his son from people that are willing to kill to get him. That’s a pretty dynamic shift.”

Executive producer Tim Kring, interviewed at the same Fox event, agrees. Kring says Bohm goes from “a guy who is quintessential everyman to someone who literally goes to a pawn shop and buys a gun with the intention of having to use it — and that’s over 12 episodes. That character really has become someone willing to take extraordinary action.”

The Fox promotion department, as one would expect, goes even further, stating in a release that the new season, “becomes a heart-pounding thrill ride, filled with suspense, murder, heroism and global consequencesa”

In other words, 24 2.0.

Added to the intrigue is Lukas Haas as Calvin Norburg, the mad genius of Aster Corps, a group trying to take custody of Jake away from his father in order to exploit the child’s supernatural abilities. Said Taghmaoui plays a religious zealot who factors into the international mix.

The cast addition Sutherland seemed most excited about last summer was Maria Bello. She plays Lucy, a single mom out to reunite with her own special-needs daughter who shares Jake’s number-connecting abilities.

“She’s phenomenal,” said Sutherland of Bello, last seen in the short-lived U.S. remake of Prime Suspect. Sutherland saw Bello’s character as a “lifeboat” for Bohn and Jake, an ally who would also help the audience navigate through what was admittedly a dense story.

There is word, however, that Bello has left Touch and won’t be back if the series extends beyond this season.

Critics generally praised Touch and singled out 46-year-old Sutherland for his sensitive portrayal of a devoted father. The folks at Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals seem to agree, awarding the Golden Globe Award-winner their annual Man of the Year Award.

The ratings, however, were only so-so, with a series renewal in doubt right up until Fox made their 2012-13 announcements last May.

In television, as in Touch, it’s all about the numbers. Sutherland knows that, but seemed unfazed about the so-so ratings start.

“I knew it was going to be hard,” he said, “and the irony is I think Touch was probably more successful than ’24′ was in its first season.”

Premiering the same week as the 9-11 attacks, 24 and its tale of anti-terrorism seemed too soon at first. Eventually, however, America embraced Jack Bauer and stuck with him for eight seasons.

The business of television has changed dramatically in the two-and-a-half years since 24 went off the air. Sutherland and Fox never had to contend with “binge” viewing on platforms such as Netflix and marathons of series like Breaking Bad. Does he sense viewers are looking for something different today?

“They’re looking for something good,” he says. “It’s that simple. It’s quality.

“There are so many amazing shows out there,” he adds. “There are 500 channels. It is an ocean of product and opportunity out there for a viewer. They’re looking for quality. That’s the only way to survive. I think if you try and do something different for the sake of being different, I think you’re going to be chasing that ball for a long time.”

We Hear: Clay Buchholz, Kiefer Sutherland, Robert Kraft and more...
February 12, 2013
By Gayle Fee / Boston Herald

That first there was the Nomar Bowl, which became the Beckett Bowl and, coming this June, the Thornton-Buchholz Bowl. Word from the alleys is that Bruins big guy Shawn Thornton and Red Sox hurler Clay Buchholz will join forces to take over the charity bowling bash now that Josh Beckett has headed West. The annual pin party is tentatively scheduled for late July — probably at Lucky Strike Lanes behind Fenway. But do stay tuned ...

That after “24” tough guy Kiefer Sutherland received his Hasty Pudding pot at the Charles Hotel the other night, he repaired to the bar at Tommy Doyle’s in Harvard Square to ride out the storm. TV’s Jack Bauer sat at the bar, drank Macallan 21 single malt scotch and chatted up the locals. Word was he was “down to earth” and “low key” — unlike his terrorist-terrorizing TV persona!

That off-duty staffers at WCVB, including morning anchor guy Randy Price and anchor Bob Halloran, pitched in to dig their colleagues’ cars out of the snow before heading home to sleep off the Blizzard of 2013. So when their fellow Channel 5 peeps finished their 36-hour shifts, their wheels were snow-free and ready to pull out of the parking lot at 5 TV Place. Wow, blizzard beneficence. We dig it!

And that Patriots poohbah Robert Kraft and his actress/inamorata, Ricki Noel Lander, made the glitzy Grammy Awards scene this weekend in La-La. The lovebirds walked the red carpets at the Grammys on Sunday night and at music impresario Clive Davis’ annual awards eve ‘do at the Beverly Hilton. Robert is a board member of Viacom, which owns CBS, the network that broadcasted the music industry awards show. Hence, the all-access pass.

Kiefer Sutherland still wants to do a '24' movie
By Stephanie Kaplan, 4/10/2013
Though any action for a movie rendition of '24' has been halted several times, the actor still hopes that he gets a chance to film the flick

Missing Jack Bauer? Well, so is the actor who plays the American television hero, Kiefer Sutherland. Though rumors have been going back and forth on whether or not the drama will ever hit theaters, Sutherland states that we would still love to do a film.

After eight action-packed seasons and a television movie of 24, rumors started that Fox and Sutherland were both interested in giving the series one big last goodbye and take it to the big screen. However, as MSN reports, the impending project has been put on and off a pause ever since the final episode of 24 aired in 2010. Recently, the director for the gig, Antoine Fuqua, recently hinted that the idea for the movie had faded.

While it's still unclear what the movie's fate may be, lead actor of the series Sutherland told The Sun that he is still very interested in making the film. He shared, “I want to make the 24 movie as long as I can run.”

The actor, who currently stars in Fox's Touch, reveals that he filmed a rare chase scene for the show, and was reminded of his former highly-physical scenes when playing agent Jack Bauer. He said, “I had to chase someone for the first time in a very long time and when we finished the scene, one of the crew said with a wink: ‘That felt pretty familiar didn’t it? Kind of cool to watch you run again. I didn’t know if you could any more.’”

The star's father, Donald Sutherland, is also a famous actor, and the Touch star shared that for the first time in their careers, they will be filming together for an upcoming movie. “We’re going to make a Western together,” the star said. "It’s a beautiful story. I’m very, very excited - and nervous - about doing it.”
